Frequently Asked Questions...
From Parents....
Q. "Does it cost anything to be in MCJROTC?"
A. It does not cost anything to be in MCJROTC. Unless we go in fieldtrips or something extra, it is free. But, If a cadet "misplaces" a uniform, or just part of it, they will be responsable for paying it back, or finding it.
Q. "Does my son/daughter have an obligation to the Armed Forces?"
A. No, being in JROTC of any kind does not require the cadet to be in the armed forces for any amount of time.
Q. "How often does my son/daughter have to wear the uniform?"
A. The uniform is worn once a week, on inspection days, either Wednesday or Thursday. The cadet is responsable for knowing which uniform to wear, and how to wear it properly. Sometimes there will be special occassions where the cadet will wear more than one uniform a week, or wear the same uniform twice that week. That may be if they are on the color guard, or drill team, or there is a special occasion.
Q. "What happens if my son/daughter forgets to wear thier uniform?"
A. If they forget, they MUST wear it the next day. And it effects their insection grade.
Q. "What can my son/daughter expect?"
A. In MCJROTC, your student can expect to work hard, but have fun if they participate. Cadets will be expected to know their "Knowledge", as well as learn how to march, and how to be a good citizen, and leader. Cadets get promoted on merit, which is by what they do. If they participate in many JROTC activites, know their knowledge, and show good leadership qualities, they will have a better chance at getting promoted, and recieveing the grade they want. On the other hand, if a cadet does not take the class seriously, and does not know his/her knowledge, or just slacks off, they will be putting their promotion and grade in jeporady.
Q. "What will my son/daughter do in MCJROTC?"
A. In the class period, the cadet will go over knowledge, and there will be a lot of marching practice. Master Gunnery Sergeant Hernandez has come up with a new way though, to teach cadets to keep their ears open, and minds sharp - the Master Gunny says game! Kind of like simon says, just it is with Drill commands. So the cadet will have to listen not only to the cammand, but if Master Gunny said. Many cadets enjoy this new approach. If the cadet would like to do extra activities, like Drill Team, Color Guard, or PFT, there will be practices on given days of the week at 0730. Also, being in MCJROTC, the cadets do a lot of voulenteer work for the school and/or the community. That is voulentary, of course.
Q. "What topics are covered?"
A. In JROTC, the main topics that are covered are.... knowledge - knowing about the MC and the cadets JROTC Unit., leadership - cadets will learn leadership qualities, and what it takes to become a good leader., teamwork - teamwork and tact is important in anything anyone does, especially in JROTC. Marching for instance takes great teamwork, so the platoon moves as one, and not all wacky, but looks very squared away., dicipline - the cadet will learn self-dicipline, like bearing, and self-control., initiuative - if the cadet show intrest and inituative, they will succeed., respect - respect for country, others, property, and self.
Q. " How much time does JROTC take up outside of school?"
A. JROTC only takes outside school time if the cadet is involved with Drill Team, Color Guard, or PFT, or voulenteer services. Color Guard, Drill, and PFT all begin at 0730, and there is a practice of some sort every morning. Practice goes until 0830. If the cadet vouleneers, it depends on what they voulenteered for.
Q. "How much physical activity can my son/daughter expect?"
A. If your son/daughter is not on the PFT Team, there will be PT days every Friday, where the cadets will either PT, or play Combat Soccer. If they are on the PFT, then they will practice at least once a week, and do something physical durring the period on Friday as well. Also, there are PF Exams, (Physical Fitness Exams) once a semester, to see who fit the cadet is, and whether or not the cadet has physically improved over the school year.
